Kitchen Renovation for Our Midcentury Modern Home

Kitchen Renovation for Our Midcentury Modern Home

Mike and I bought our home in 2016. We knew that our 1954 midcentury modern house would be a fixer upper. That's why I wanted the house. It needed just enough work done to call it customized. Or so I thought. Y'all, my beautiful home is not a lemon but is in dire need of repairs.

The day after we moved in, there was a freak storm and Mike was away tabling at Heroes Con in Charlotte. A 10ft branch from our neighbor's tree went completely through our roof. It was very dramatic. The money we thought would go into the kitchen or bathroom was quickly allocated to replacing the roof. Fun.

In 2019, our wall oven that was a selling feature for me, died. We were in the middle of making a pizza and the oven just said "no". Y'all, the oven was original and missing its glass plate but it was special to me. I have always had a fondness for midcentury design and fashion. The Southern girl in me loves to make old "new" again when needed.

We searched for the parts we thought we needed to make the oven work. Nothing worked. Every time we installed a heating element, I would hold my breath in anticipation. They all failed to bring it back to life. For years, I sat stubbornly holding out for the repair of my 60+ year old wall oven. Now I'm ready to let go and proceed with fully loving the kitchen in its entirety. That means we first need to figure out how to cut a space for a modern range. Then we can fill the gap in the wall that is now occupied by a relic.

With that being done, we will work to improve the flow of our workspace. Kitchens are important to me. They serve as the center of the home. When we host our friends, most of us gather in my tiny kitchen. The idea of making the space more "us" and less "me" is exciting and scary. I look forward to sharing our design ideas and what happens behind the scenes. I'm really looking forward to sewing more unpaper towels and curtains for the space.
